Once named Gamminstete Gamstädt stands as a testament to resilience. This village now part of Nesse-Apfelstädt boasts a history etched in both hardship and agricultural prosperity. Imagine life in 1275 when Gamstädt was first documented.

Gamstädt’s story is one of ownership changing hands. It belonged to the Landgraves of Thuringia the Dukes of Saxony and the Counts of Gleichen. Churches and monasteries in Erfurt held many properties and fields here. Devastating fires struck Gamstädt multiple times. Swedish troops plundered it repeatedly during the Thirty Years’ War. In 1747 Prussian troops besieged the village.

Before the Thirty Years’ War Gamstädt had 346 residents. By 1638 only 95 remained. From 58 houses only 27 were habitable. Livestock was decimated. Swedish General Johan Banér’s army plundered Gamstädt in 1640. Despite these setbacks Gamstädt persevered.

The fertile soil around Gamstädt defined the village’s character. For centuries flax and anise were primary crops. Even now agriculture remains important. The Agrar GmbH Gamstädt-Kleinrettbach is the biggest employer.

Gamstädt’s location on the B7 highway between Erfurt and Gotha helped it grow. It became a modern residential area. The “Die Aue” residential area shapes the village’s modern look. Gamstädt is the northernmost part of Nesse-Apfelstädt. It sits close to Erfurt the capital of Thuringia.

The village features St Michael’s Church with old grave slabs. A war memorial honors the fallen of World War One. On the eastern edge where the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha once bordered Prussia stands a sandstone border eagle. Across the road is the old customs house now a business.

The Gleichenhof the “Weimarischer Hof” and the “Fürstenhof” once served travelers. These were resting places on the Erfurt road. Old farmhouses many half-timbered reflect the pride of their owners. Gamstädt maintains its charm mixing history with modern life.

The Gamstädt coat of arms features a golden viol crossed by a bow over three silver waves. The viol represents the village name. The blue color hints at the Waid plant grown in the area. The arms combine symbols from Gamstädt and Kleinrettbach.

Gamstädt’s story includes many active clubs. There is a fire brigade a model airplane club and a carnival club. There is also a club for the preservation of the Kleinrettbach village church and the Jitoku martial arts club. Gamstädt also has a poultry club.

Gamstädt a place repeatedly tested by time continues to thrive. It has transformed into a blend of agriculture residence and community. Gamstädt shows how a village can maintain its identity while evolving.
