Raised in the shadow of poverty, Myrioh’s story intertwines with Galveston Urban Ministries (GUM). GUM, a beacon of hope, offered Myrioh resilience and a path towards a brighter future. She’s a testament to GUM’s mission: to empower marginalized individuals to achieve their full potential. Thirty percent of Galveston’s children grapple with poverty, often trapped in a cycle of hardship. GUM recognizes that true poverty stems from a fractured sense of self and a lack of direction. Galveston Urban Ministries strives to address this through holistic programs that engage, equip, and empower. Myrioh, once a struggling student, is now a college graduate, aspiring to become a teacher. Her journey, from a child caught in the “tyranny of the moment” to a confident young woman, embodies GUM’s transformative impact. Galveston Urban Ministries isn’t just about providing temporary relief. It’s about fostering lasting change. They work with families to secure stable housing, affordable childcare, and better employment opportunities. They provide vital personal documents, enabling individuals to navigate society with ease and dignity. GUM’s programs encompass spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, and social development. They recognize the interconnectedness of these aspects in achieving true well-being. GUM also understands the importance of community. They host block parties and community meetings, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. This spirit of togetherness is vital in transforming neighborhoods from places people want to leave to places they’re proud to call home. Galveston Urban Ministries even has a Christmas Toy Store and a School Supply Store. These initiatives allow parents to shop affordably and with dignity, ensuring their children have the resources they need to thrive. From dilapidated drug houses to a vibrant community center, GUM’s presence has revitalized city blocks. The organization’s influence is evident in the transformed lives and the revitalized neighborhood it serves. Myrioh’s story is just one of many. In 2022, Galveston Urban Ministries served 1,287 individuals. They helped 15 families begin their journey out of poverty and assisted 124 adults in obtaining vital resources. They also provided school supplies for 184 children and Christmas gifts for 291 children. Nearly 450 volunteers contributed their time and skills, further enriching the community. Galveston Urban Ministries continues to be a source of hope and transformation in Galveston, empowering individuals like Myrioh to break free from poverty and create a brighter future for themselves and their community.
