The name “Galle Face” has interesting origins. One theory links it to the Dutch term for fortifications. Another suggests it comes from the Sinhalese words for “rocky shoreline.”

In its early days, Galle Face Green served various purposes. Horse racing was popular here in the 1820s. The area was leveled to create a race course. This course was about one and a half miles long. The first recorded horse racing meet occurred in 1821. A pavilion was built for viewing the races. It evolved into the Colombo Club building. Today, it is the Crystal Ballroom of the Taj Samudra Hotel.

Golf also has roots at Galle Face Green. British expatriates started playing golf here in 1879. They established the Colombo Golf Club. However, the club later moved to Borella. Galle Face was becoming too crowded.

Rugby had its start here too. The first official rugby match in Ceylon occurred at Galle Face Green in 1879.

Even cricket has a connection. The inaugural Royal-Thomian cricket match took place here in 1879.

Today, Galle Face Green is a lively public space. It is open to everyone. People come to enjoy the sea breeze and open sky. Families, couples, and tourists gather here. Weekends are especially busy. Food vendors sell tasty treats. These include cooked crabs and prawns.

Two large hotels border Galle Face Green. One is the Ceylon Inter-Continental Hotel. The other is the Galle Face Hotel. This hotel has old-world charm.

Galle Face Green is also the site of Sri Lanka’s national day celebration. This occurs annually on February 4.
