Across the vast expanse of Texas, nestled along San Geronimo Creek, a simple aluminum plaque marks a place brimming with history: the Gallagher Ranch. This ranch, also known as Clifden, holds the distinction of being the oldest dude ranch in Texas. Its story begins long before tourists and celebrities graced its grounds, with a man named Peter Gallagher. In 1833, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna commissioned Gallagher, an Irish immigrant and civil engineer, to find a suitable location for a military supply depot near San Antonio. Gallagher selected this very spot. The ranch became more than just a depot. It evolved into a community, boasting a post office, school, hotel, and even two churches. By 1884, fifty souls called Gallagher’s Ranch home. Yet, by 1896, only a general store and the post office remained. The post office itself closed in 1909. The ranch was revived in 1927 when millionaire Mrs. Amy Shelton McNutt purchased the property, transforming it into a dude ranch. The Gallagher Ranch played host to a fascinating array of guests, including the Ziegfeld Follies, Prince William of Sweden, and the legendary Will Rogers. As you stand before this plaque, imagine the echoes of laughter, the clip-clop of horses’ hooves, and the stories whispered within the stone walls of the old ranch house. The Gallagher Ranch plaque stands not just as a marker of a physical place, but as a testament to the enduring spirit of Texas, a place where history and hospitality intertwine.
