Perhaps Galhyeon-dong’s name hints at its hidden charm. Galhyeon-dong is a neighborhood in Seoul’s Eunpyeong District. Its name comes from the Chinese characters meaning Kudzu Pass. In Korean, this is Galgogae. This name came about because arrowroot roots were abundant here.

Galhyeon-dong offers a unique blend of city life and natural beauty. It is divided into two sub-districts. These are Galhyeon 1-dong and Galhyeon 2-dong.

As of 2017, Galhyeon-dong covered 1.93 square kilometers. It had over 56000 residents. Galhyeon 1-dong had about 25000 residents. Galhyeon 2-dong had over 30000.

The Dongguk Yeoji Bigo, a historical record, also calls this region Galgogae. Imagine this area long ago. It was full of kudzu vines. These vines likely covered the hillsides. They may have even crept into the pathways.

Today, Galhyeon-dong is bordered by several neighborhoods. Jingwan-dong is to the north. Bulgwang-dong is to the east. Gusan-dong and Daejo-dong are to the south. Changneung-dong in Goyang-si lies to the west.

For those seeking nature, Bukhansan National Park is nearby. Its trails offer amazing views. You can find peaceful spots away from the city’s hustle. Galhyeon-dong also has local cafes. They provide a calm escape from the busy streets. You can experience the local culture. You can enjoy a slower pace of life. Galhyeon-dong is a special corner of Seoul.

Galhyeon-dong has been part of significant historical shifts. During the Goryeo Dynasty, the area was known as Yangju. It later became Namgyeong. This made it a geographically important place. In the Joseon Dynasty, it became part of Hansung-bu. This later became Seoul.

Even after Korea was annexed by the Japanese Empire, the area evolved. It eventually became part of Goyang-gun. Later, it returned to Seoul. It became part of Seodaemun-gu. Finally, it became today’s Eunpyeong-gu. This area showcases resilience and change.

So, as you explore Galhyeon-dong remember its past. Think of the kudzu vines. Envision its historical importance. Appreciate its blend of urban and natural charms. Galhyeon-dong offers a unique experience. It connects history, nature, and community.
