Have you ever heard of a town that revolved around roosters and eagles? Welcome to Galgagnano, a charming comune nestled in the heart of Italy’s Lombardy region. Galgagnano’s story is etched not just in its cobblestone streets and ancient buildings, but in its very coat of arms. The azure field showcases a golden eagle, wings spread in regal splendor, alongside a proud black rooster. These symbols reflect the rich history of this small town, located about 45 kilometers southeast of Milan and a mere 5 kilometers northwest of Lodi. Galgagnano is bordered by several municipalities including Zelo Buon Persico, Mulazzano, Cervignano d’Adda, Boffalora d’Adda, and Montanaso Lombardo. The history of Galgagnano intertwines with the powerful Bishopric of Lodi. Until 1142, the town was under the bishop’s control, then passed into the hands of Uberto dei Casetti. Galgagnano’s church served as a significant religious center, a plebane, until 1440. Even during the Napoleonic era, Galgagnano’s identity remained resilient. Although briefly a frazione of Quartiano from 1809-1816, it regained its autonomy with the establishment of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. The heart of Galgagnano is its magnificent parish church, dedicated to Saint Sisinnius the Martyr. Originally constructed in 1540, the church has undergone several renovations throughout the centuries, each layer adding to its unique character. But Galgagnano is more than just its church. The Palazzo, now the town hall, whispers stories of bygone administrations. Cascina Grande, the oldest farmhouse in Galgagnano, stands as a testament to the town’s agricultural roots. And “Le due colombe”, once a bustling horse exchange station on the Monzasca road, adds another layer to Galgagnano’s rich tapestry. Sadly, a small church dedicated to Saint Martin and an oratory dedicated to Saint Roch are no longer standing, their stories fading into the mists of time. Today, Galgagnano retains its rural charm despite the presence of around ten farms. These farms, owned by the Ospedale Maggiore of Lodi, are entrusted to local families, ensuring the continuation of Galgagnano’s agricultural heritage. A modest equestrian center at Cascina Bellaria further reinforces this connection to the land. Officine Curioni, a prominent mechanical industry, along with smaller businesses like Flexotecnica and Sycla, represent the modern face of Galgagnano’s economy. As you stroll through Galgagnano, let the symbols of the eagle and the rooster guide your imagination. They represent the spirit of this resilient town, a blend of historical grandeur and enduring rural charm. Galgagnano invites you to discover its story.
