Welcome to the Galerie im Könerpark a surprising oasis in the heart of Berlin’s Neukölln district. Did you know this stunning gallery is housed in a former orangery? Originally a gravel pit it was transformed through the generosity of entrepreneur Franz Köner.
In 1916 Köner gifted this pit to the city. But he had a condition the park must bear his name. The result is a truly remarkable space. Designed in a Neo-baroque style the park’s levels lie several meters below street level. Long staircases with balustrades lead down to the lawns. Water cascades down six levels feeding a fountain that gracefully spits water back into the air.
After the Second World War the park fell into disrepair. It was neglected a forgotten jewel. But in 1977 its reconstruction began. The restoration was enormous a huge undertaking for the district. Finally in 1983 the orangery was reborn. This former greenhouse was transformed into the Galerie im Könerpark.
The gallery opened with a bang featuring drawings by Markus Lüpertz. Since then it has been a cultural hub. Showcasing nationally and internationally renowned contemporary artists. The gallery truly brings life to this unique setting.
