“Why does this building look like a house?” you might ask. Well, welcome to the Galeria Artes Solar Sto António. It is more than just a gallery. It is also a house museum recognized by the Ministry of Culture.

The Galeria Artes Solar Sto António comprises two buildings. The first building dates back to the mid-19th century. Architect Serge Mège oversaw its restoration in 1987-1988. He preserved many original features. These include the flooring doors windows and facade. Only the facade of the second building remained from the 1940s. Luzia Abreu reconstructed it with guidance from Pasqualino Magnavita.

The Galeria Artes Solar Sto António displays an eclectic collection. It features academic contemporary and popular art. You will even find “Art of the Unconscious”. This collection was built over 60 years across four continents.

Notice the small patio on the first floor. It provides ventilation and natural light. Many birds like to gather here. Take a look at the Eckenberger bas-relief. The Galeria Artes Solar Sto António also includes a cultural garden. You can see ceramic works by Eckenberger and Naco.

There is also an arena theater that seats 80 people.

The Galeria Artes Solar Sto António receives no government or corporate funding. It sustains itself through several means. It operates an art gallery. The spaces are rented for film and fashion shoots. Vogue and Playboy have used it. Two apartments are rented as a B&B.

You can visit the Casa-Museu Solar Santo António. You need to schedule your visit in advance. The visit costs R$10.00 per person. There is a minimum of four visitors. The tour lasts about an hour. Smoking and cell phone use are prohibited during the tour. Photos are allowed. Tours are available in Portuguese French Spanish and English.

Alternatively you can stay in one of the apartments. They feature a bedroom bathroom and terrace with a hammock. The rate is R$150.00 per night. Breakfast is included.
