How many stories high do you think these towers are? Forty-four stories to be exact. Welcome to the Galaxy Towers a trio of octagonal giants in Guttenberg New Jersey. These aren’t just buildings they are a self-contained city within a town. They were built in 1976 a partnership between Norman Belfer a Long Island developer and the Prudential Insurance Company of America. Originally rental apartments they transformed into condominiums in 1980.

Imagine the scene in 1976. The Hudson Palisades a former site of the White Brewery were being reshaped. These towers rose creating a stunning but controversial skyline. Environmentalists weren’t happy. They felt the towers blocked valuable views.

The Galaxy Towers’ 1075 units are spread across three 44-story towers with two connecting 16-story structures. Many apartments boast breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. The octagonal shape and staggered design enhance those views.

The unique design wasn’t just for aesthetics. It presented marketing challenges. Renting the luxury apartments in a small town like Guttenberg was difficult. Even after converting to condos sales were slow. Tenants who chose not to buy complicated matters. Their occupancy hindered the sale of their apartments. The $3.3 million in real-estate taxes these towers pay is more than Guttenberg collects from the rest of the town.

But the Galaxy Towers aren’t just about numbers and views. They are a microcosm of life. A vibrant community lives within. There’s a two-level mall below the towers with shops restaurants and even a former movie theater the Galaxy TriPlex. It closed in 2007 and became office space. There are pools an exercise room and plenty of space for recreation. A North Bergen Library branch even opened there in 2018.

The Galaxy Towers have been the site of both accidents and incidents. Sadly several people have jumped from the towers. A man once drove his car through a wall ending up seven stories down a ventilation shaft. Surprisingly he survived with only minor injuries. And in a tragic accident an elevator repair technician was killed in 2016.

The Galaxy Towers’ story is a fascinating blend of architectural ambition economic challenges and the everyday lives of its residents. Their unusual history and unique features make them a truly remarkable part of the New Jersey skyline. They’re a testament to the resilience of urban development and the enduring appeal of a unique place to live.
