Whispers of history linger here. This is Galatia Baptist Church. Not in New Orleans but in Arkansas. The very land you stand on holds stories of faith and community. For generations families have gathered here. Their joys their sorrows their hopes and dreams woven into the fabric of this church.

Galatia Baptist Church wasn’t always here. It began in 1886. It started when Robert Lackey donated ten acres of land. This land included a family cemetery. A small church was built. This was a Methodist Episcopal Church South. The name Galatia likely echoed the region in Anatolia. The Apostle Paul wrote letters to Christian converts there.

The first church building burned. A new one rose overlooking the cemetery. This new building was more than a place of worship. It served as a schoolhouse. It hosted community gatherings. Funerals pie suppers and even literary society meetings took place within these walls. The Baxter Bulletin reported students from Devero attended school here in 1906. Devero later became Norfork.

Life at Galatia Baptist Church wasn’t always easy. Membership declined in the mid-1900s. The church was consolidated with the Norfork United Methodist Church in the 1970s. It even served as a meeting place for the Church of Christ. This blending of congregations reflects the spirit of unity within the small community.

In 1978 the Galatia Cemetery Association formed. They took on the responsibility of maintaining the church and the cemetery. The church building was later deeded to the Galatia Cemetery Association then to the Galatia Church Association. The building was restored. A new roof and siding were added. Interior repairs were made. In 1993 a Galatia Christian Fellowship briefly used the building. But by 2015 the building was condemned. It stands as a reminder of the importance of preserving the history of small rural churches.
