Galapo Playground

Officer Galapo’s dream echoed in the cheers of children playing at Galapo Playground. This Brooklyn haven, nestled between Bedford Avenue, Gravesend Neck Road, Avenue V, and East 24th Street, is more than just slides and swings. It’s a tribute to a life cut short, a testament to a dream fulfilled. Joe Galapo, born in 1958, journeyed from Cairo to Paris, carrying a singular aspiration: to become a policeman. Brooklyn became his family’s final destination, the place where his dream took root. After high school, he entered the Police Academy. His five years of service began in Coney Island’s 60th Precinct. Later, he joined the Brooklyn South Narcotics Unit. His dedication and hard work earned him respect. Tragically, on August 16, 1988, Officer Galapo was killed in the line of duty during an arrest attempt. He was posthumously awarded the rank of Detective. Galapo Playground stands as a living memorial. It’s a place where his spirit lives on in the laughter and play of children. The playground’s history stretches back to 1940 when the Department of Parks acquired the land. By July 1941, the playground was complete. Concrete walks, pin oaks, and benches lined the perimeter along Avenue V and Bedford Avenue. A concrete walk with trees extended along East 24th Street and Gravesend Neck Road. The playground was thoughtfully divided into three sections. Two paved panels with benches and shade trees separated the areas. A brick comfort station and recreation building stood in the central compartment between the Avenue V entrances. A shower basin was situated north of the building. The section along Bedford Avenue was designed for preschool children, equipped with see-saws, slides, and chair swings enclosed by a chain-link fence. A sand pit, designed with irrigation for cleaning, nestled in the southeast corner. The smallest section, near East 24th Street, catered to older children with exercise equipment, slides, and swings. The Works Progress Administration, working from plans by the Department of Parks, brought this vibrant space to life. Galapo Playground has seen renovations over the years, in 1997 and again in 2011, ensuring it remains a vital part of the community.
