Originally built between 1898 and 1900 this magnificent villa was commissioned by Fritz Kaeferle a heating manufacturer and privy councilor. Architect Emil Lorenz designed it in the stunning Neorenaissance style. Imagine the opulence the intricate details the grandeur of this private residence. It was a true reflection of Kaeferle’s success.

After Kaeferle’s death in 1911 his widow sold the property including its expansive garden designed by Julius Trip to the Kingdom of Prussia. For years it served as the residence for the government presidents of the Hanover district within the Prussian province of Hanover. Then came World War II. Repeated bombing raids damaged the villa significantly. A direct hit in March 1945 required an emergency roof repair. The war years left their mark.

Following the war various offices used the building. Then in April 1946 Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf the then-President of the Province of Hanover designated it as the future “House of the State Government”. Construction approval followed in August 1946. Two years later the renovations were complete. Kopf now Minister-President of the newly founded state of Lower Saxony in November 1946 established his office in the villa’s upper floor. Cabinet meetings also took place here.

The Gästehaus continued to serve as the state’s guesthouse hosting high-ranking visitors. It has seen countless events receptions awards ceremonies and cabinet meetings. The building underwent extensive renovations between 2016 and 2018. This wasn’t just about modernizing technology. It was also a careful restoration returning sections of the ground and upper floors to their original glory.

Today the Gästehaus der Niedersächsischen Landesregierung stands as a symbol of continuity. It’s a blend of Gründerzeit elegance and 21st-century technology.
