Gazing towards the western horizon of the Salt Lake Valley, the three concrete stacks of the Gadsby Power Plant dominate the view. These stacks, a constant presence in the cityscape, tell a story of Utah’s evolving relationship with energy. The Gadsby Power Plant, owned and operated by Rocky Mountain Power (a subsidiary of PacifiCorp), has been a key energy provider for Salt Lake City since 1951. Originally a coal-burning plant, Gadsby transitioned to natural gas in the 1990s. This shift reflects a larger national trend away from coal and towards cleaner energy sources. Gadsby’s conversion played a part in improving Salt Lake City’s air quality, a significant concern in the past. The plant boasts an installed capacity of a whopping 492.1 megawatts, enough to power a considerable portion of the Salt Lake Valley. This power output underscores Gadsby’s importance in the region’s energy landscape. Interestingly, despite its industrial nature, the Gadsby Power Plant became a pivotal point in Salt Lake City’s journey towards clean energy. In 2016, city officials, recognizing the need for sustainable practices, initiated conversations with Rocky Mountain Power. This collaboration aimed to find ways for the city to achieve its renewable energy goals while still relying on the utility. The resulting HB 411 Community Renewable Energy Act, signed into law in 2019, provides a pathway for Utah cities to transition to net-zero emissions by 2030. The Gadsby Power Plant stands as a symbol of this transition, marking a shift from Utah’s coal-dependent past towards a future powered by renewable resources. While Gadsby itself may not be a renewable energy source, its role in facilitating the state’s clean energy transition is undeniable. The plant continues to be a crucial part of Salt Lake City’s energy infrastructure. Its presence reminds us of the complex interplay between our energy needs and our environmental responsibilities.
