“Ever heard of Brother Gabriel Sagard” I ask you. Right here in Montreal stands a testament to his incredible journey. This neighbourhood Gabriel-Sagard remembers a man who lived among the Huron people. He was a Recollet brother. He ventured into their world in 1623.

Sagard’s journey began far from this place. He sailed from Paris to Quebec City. Then he traveled to the Huron territory near Lake Huron. The French called this lake La Mer Douce the sweet or fresh-water sea. Sagard lived among the Huron for a year. He learned their language. He prayed. He visited their families. He even helped build an Indian-style cabin.

Sagard’s experiences weren’t all peaceful. He describes the Huron customs and way of life. He also details their hardships. Provisions were scarce at times. The missionaries even used wild grape juice for mass wine. They faced challenges from those who sought to exploit the Huron. They also had to deal with thefts. Some Huron would steal their belongings.

Sagard documented his incredible adventures. He wrote Le grand voyage du pays des Hurons. This book is a remarkable account of his life among the Huron. It’s detailed. It’s surprisingly accurate. It’s full of ethnographic detail. It also describes the region’s flora and fauna. This made him the first religious historian of Canada. He later wrote L’histoire du Canada. This expanded on his earlier work. He also compiled a Huron-French dictionary. Though imperfect it remains a valuable resource.

Sagard’s legacy is profound. He helped bridge cultures. His writings offer a unique perspective on early New France. His work helps us understand the relationship between the French and Indigenous people. And so we remember Gabriel Sagard. Not just a name on a map. But a real person. A man of faith. A man of adventure. A historian whose insights illuminate a significant chapter in Canadian history. He left an enduring mark on the land he traversed. A mark that is still felt in this Montreal neighbourhood that bears his name.
