Imagine envoys from across the Korean Peninsula arriving here long ago. This is Furumiyabashi. This bridge whispers tales of Osaka’s vibrant past.

Furumiyabashi stands as a testament to Osaka’s historical role. Osaka flourished as Japan’s economic and political center. That was in the 5th century. Naniwazu, near Osaka’s Chuo Ward, was a gateway to Korea and China. Visitors brought crafts and technologies. Buddhism spread through Japan at this time.

Prince Shotoku built Shitennoji Temple in 593. Osaka developed into an international city. Emperor Kokutoku moved the capital to Osaka in 645. He built Naniwa Palace. It is the oldest imperial palace in Japan. Later, the capital moved again. Osaka remained important for trade and diplomacy.

In the 14th century, wars devastated Osaka. Rennyo built Ishiyama Gobo in 1496. It became Ishiyama Honganji. This served as a fortress.

Oda Nobunaga attacked Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple for over 10 years. Most of it burned down. Nobunaga’s successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruled from Osaka. Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle in 1583. The city developed as a transportation hub connected to the sea. Osaka Castle burned down in 1614 and 1615. The Toyotomi clan was destroyed.

The Tokugawa clan took control. The political center moved to Edo now Tokyo. Osaka rebuilt itself quickly. It became known as “the kitchen of the world”. Important goods were traded here. Rice was sent from Osaka across Japan. Osaka also began exporting products overseas.

This economic growth fostered Osaka’s unique culture. Popular arts emerged. These derived from traditional culture. Osaka contributed to education as well. Schools produced influential scholars. Tekijuku studied Western science and medicine. Some students helped open the country. It later became Osaka University.

Osaka tried to transition to an industrial city. By the late 19th century, it was called “Manchester of the East”. In 1889, Osaka City was incorporated. The Fifth National Industrial Exposition was held in 1903. Japan’s first public streetcar launched in Osaka. Until 1925, Osaka was Japan’s most populous city.

One-third of Osaka was destroyed in World War II. Postwar reconstruction brought the city back. Today, Osaka remains a vital economic center.

In 1970, Osaka hosted Asia’s first World Expo. The city continues to host international events. Osaka is a world-class metropolis.
