Lost in the annals of time lies Fundeni-Dobroești a captivating corner of Bucharest. Fundeni-Dobroești whispers tales of ancient settlements. It sits nestled on the banks of the Colentina River. Imagine the scene centuries ago. Fundeni a small village isolated by the river and its lakes. The only route to Bucharest was a winding path through Afumați in Ilfov County. Another crossing existed near the present-day railway bridge. Fundeni-Dobroești was surrounded by forests. One the Grădiștea forest held a secret. A 1634 document mentions the village priest. He became a monk building a church and hermitage in the forest’s heart.

Fundeni-Dobroești’s history stretches back to 1559. Prince Mircea Ciobanul granted land to Baldovin and his sister Neacșa. They inherited parts of Fundeni. Older documents proved their family’s long-standing ownership. These documents reveal a village much older than 1559. It was inhabited by free men. Throughout the 17th century various landlords owned Fundeni. Logofăt Stanciu Spătar Miho Clucer Tomeanul and Logofăt Vâlcul all held parts of the estate. By the end of the 16th and into the 17th century land ownership consolidated. A few powerful landlords controlled most of Fundeni-Dobroești.

Fundeni-Dobroești became a significant battleground. On October 25 1632 Matei Basarab defeated Radu Ilieș’s army. Radu Ilieș also claimed the Wallachian throne. In the latter half of the 17th century Spătar Mihai Cantacuzino acquired much of Fundeni. He received 500 stânjeni along the Colentina River from Șerban Cantacuzino and Constantin Brâncoveanu. He further expanded his holdings through marriage and buyouts. Cantacuzino built new houses in Fundeni. He also created the Fundeni lake by damming the Colentina River.

Fundeni-Dobroești evolved. In the 18th century it split. Fundenii-Doamnei belonged to the Mogoșești family. Fundenii-Racoviță belonged to the Racoviță family. This division is shown on an Austrian map from 1791. Vel Vistier Dumitrașco Racoviță built a paper mill around 1765-66. He used foreign technicians and corvée labor. Despite this Fundeni-Dobroești remained largely agrarian with feudal structures.

In 1864 Fundeni-Dobroești joined Colentina to form the Colentina-Fundeni rural commune. Land reform in 1864 redistributed some property. Large estates however remained intact. By the end of the 19th century landowner Ștefan Capșa owned 500 of the village’s 653 hectares of arable land. The remaining 153 hectares belonged to peasants. Fundeni-Dobroești’s population was 279. In 1939 Fundeni became part of Bucharest. Colentina developed into an urban neighborhood. Fundeni however retained a more rural character for decades. Today Fundeni-Dobroești boasts Institutul Clinic Fundeni a major Romanian hospital. It opened in 1959. The name Fundeni echoes through history.
