“Bricks for Boston College” That’s what the students chanted. They walked door to door raising funds for Fulton Hall. This wasn’t just any building. Fulton Hall stands proudly on the Boston College campus. It’s home to the Wallace E Carroll School of Management.

After World War II the college exploded with returning GIs. Existing buildings couldn’t handle the influx of 5000 students. So Fulton Hall was born a necessity. But budget constraints meant it started life as a simple two-story structure. A far cry from the majestic buildings around it. Its Gothic style was plain. Its masonry facade understated. Only the top two floors were even visible from the front. It was deemed an architectural failure among the other magnificent Maginnis & Walsh buildings.

Yet Fulton Hall’s story is one of resilience and transformation. In 1993 a major renovation breathed new life into the building. Svigals & Associates redesigned it completely. Gone was the austere facade. In its place a colorful masonry facade matching the surrounding buildings. A polychrome copper roof added a vibrant touch.

The renovation wasn’t just about aesthetics. They added a whole new section and a fifth floor. The south courtyard was transformed into a stunning five-story atrium. Exposed steel columns support the floors of the new section. This creates a modern feel a striking contrast to the original Gothic architecture. Natural light streams in through the glass ceiling. The warm wood and steel combination adds elegance and strength. The atrium is a light-filled space. Students can study or relax on the second-floor balcony. The balcony connects the old and new sections. Its handrails blend Gothic arches with modern steel and wood.

The original small library is now part of the atrium. Its windows are a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. They contrast sharply with the clean lines of the modern windows in the new section. Fulton Hall has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Today it stands as a testament to Boston College’s growth and adaptability. A place where history and modernity blend seamlessly. It’s more than just a building. It’s a symbol of perseverance. A true Boston landmark.
