Stepping into Fuli Ancient Town is like traveling back in time. This tranquil town lies eight kilometers east of Yangshuo. It has a rich history spanning over 1,000 years.

Fuli got its start during the Tang Dynasty. It was originally named Fuli Village. This name meant “hiding in the litchi forest”. The area was known for its lush litchi trees. During the Song Dynasty, Huangdao Street became a bustling hub. Convenient water transport made it prosperous. Gradually, it grew into a small town. Later, in the Ming Dynasty, it was called Mashan Fair. Finally, in the Qing Dynasty, it moved back to the old street. It was then renamed Fuli Fair.

Fuli Ancient Town boasts a wealth of cultural and historical treasures. Once, it featured three streets. It had nine wells and eighteen lanes. Three palaces, two temples and a pagoda also graced the town. Sadly, time has taken its toll. Only a few of these ancient structures remain today.

Fuli is famous as “the Home Town of Chinese Painting Fan”. Many families here practice this art form. Even young children can paint fans. These fans often depict beautiful Guilin landscapes. Some showcase poems about Yangshuo’s wonders. Former US President Bill Clinton visited Yangshuo in 1998. He called these fans “natural air-conditioners”. This brought unexpected fame to Fuli.

Every year on the eighth day of the fifth lunar month, Fuli celebrates a traditional folk festival. This festival is a time for families to reunite. Locals and relatives return to Fuli. Each family prepares a feast. Classic dishes include stuffed aubergine, stuffed chili and stuffed bitter melon.

Fuli’s scenery is stunning. The Li River flows through the town. Karst hills and lush vegetation surround it. This creates an idyllic setting. The town served as a filming location for the famous Chinese film “Liu Sanjie”.

Explore the old street’s flagstone paths. Admire the ancient Qing residences. Their white walls and black tiles are well-preserved. Visit Daguan Pavilion. Discover Sangu Stone and Tianhou Palace. The town offers picturesque views and a tranquil atmosphere. A bike ride through Fuli lets you soak in the scenery. You can explore the traditional lifestyle at your own pace.

Fuli Ancient Town offers a unique glimpse into China’s past. The stunning scenery and rich cultural heritage make it a memorable experience.
