Across the street from Fukono Elementary School, a small, weathered monument stands. It whispers a silent testament to resilience. Fukono Elementary School has borne witness to the passage of time, weathering storms both literal and figurative. Originally established in 1873, the school saw various transformations before settling into its pre-war identity as Fukuro-machi Jinjō Higher Elementary. In 1937, a state-of-the-art West Wing, built of reinforced concrete, was added. This modern marvel boasted three stories, 21 classrooms, bathrooms with running water, and even garbage chutes. A basement provided additional space. Renamed Fukuro-machi National Elementary School in 1941, it stood a mere 460 meters from the hypocenter of the atomic bomb blast. On that fateful day in August 1945, Fukono Elementary School faced its greatest challenge. The wooden school buildings were instantly obliterated, consumed by flames. Tragically, 160 students and staff members perished. Only the reinforced concrete West Wing withstood the devastation. In the aftermath, the remaining structure served as a refuge and a makeshift medical station. After minimal renovations, Fukono Elementary School bravely reopened its doors in May 1946. Imagine, just a year after the bombing, classes resumed on the third floor of the West Wing. Thirty-seven students and three dedicated teachers gathered. They used wooden boxes on straw mats as desks. Pieces of burnt wood, painted black, served as chalkboards. Fukono Elementary School continued to function within these walls until deterioration necessitated demolition. During the demolition process, a remarkable discovery was made. Hidden behind blackboards and under layers of plaster were messages written by survivors, known as hibaku dengon. These poignant testaments to the human spirit sparked a movement to preserve the history of Fukono Elementary School. After a preliminary opening in August 2001, the Fukuro-machi Elementary School Peace Museum officially opened its doors in April 2002. Today, Fukono Elementary School stands not only as a reminder of the tragic past but also as a symbol of hope and the enduring power of the human spirit.
