“Is this the place where blessings multiply?” Indeed, this is Fujiidera. This city in Osaka Prefecture holds a special place in history and culture. Let’s explore the story of Fujiidera together.

Fujiidera’s story stretches back centuries. The area was once part of Kawachi Province. This province played a role in early Japanese history. The Yamato River was a key transport route. It connected the sea to ancient capitals in the Nara region.

Later, the area saw battles during the Siege of Osaka. The Battle of Domyoji took place here in Fujiidera. This siege was a turning point. It led to the reunification of Japan and a long period of peace.

Now, Fujiidera is a small city. It covers only 8.89 square kilometers. But it has a rich history. The city’s name comes from the Fujiidera Temple. This temple is a significant site on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.

The Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage includes 33 temples in the Kansai region. These temples are dedicated to Kannon. Kannon is a bodhisattva who represents compassion. Fujiidera Temple is the fifth temple on this route.

Inside Fujiidera Temple lies a treasure. It is Japan’s oldest Thousand-Armed Kannon figure. This statue is a designated National Treasure. Unlike other “thousand-armed” statues, this one truly has over one thousand arms. It has 1041 hands. Each palm has an eye. These eyes symbolize Kannon’s ability to see suffering in the world.

You can view Fujiidera’s Thousand-Armed Kannon on the 18th of each month. A special admission fee of 500 yen applies on this day. Many believe that worshipping the Senju Kannon brings immense blessings. Some say it equals 46000 days worth.

The Furuichi Kofun Cluster also lies within Fujiidera. These ancient burial mounds date back to the 3rd to 6th centuries. They were built for Japan’s ruling class. The Furuichi cluster is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Some kofun are imperial tombs. They are claimed to enshrine Emperor Chuai and Empress Nakatsuhime-no-mikoto.

Though some kofun are inaccessible, others are public parks. These parks allow you to get close to these historical sites.

In 1966, Misasagi was promoted to city status and renamed Fujiidera.

Today, Fujiidera is also known for its local attractions. Domyoji-Tenmangu Shrine and the Ko Site are worth a visit.

As you leave Fujiidera, remember its history. It is a city of ancient temples and burial mounds. Fujiidera offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich past. The blessings of Kannon and the echoes of emperors resonate here.
