Look closely at the Fuente de los Delfines. Its elegant simplicity might deceive you. This unassuming fountain in Madrid holds centuries of history. It wasn’t always known as the Fuente de los Delfines. In fact its story begins long before these playful dolphins graced its face.

The Fuente de los Delfines stands on the corner of Hortaleza and Santa Brígida streets. Its location has witnessed much change. Originally it was a much simpler structure. It was the Fuente de las Recogidas. It served the Convent of Santa María Magdalena. This convent was also known as the Convent of the Recogidas. The water came from the distant Castellana Fountain. Imagine the bustle of people collecting water centuries ago.

In 1772 a grand transformation took place. Architect Ventura Rodríguez created a more elaborate fountain. This one was much larger. It had four spouts and was adorned with stone tortoises. It became known as the Fuente de los Galápagos. Twenty-four water carriers served the neighborhood.

However Madrid’s growth brought new challenges. Increasing traffic made the old fountain a hindrance. By 1864 it was dismantled. The current smaller design was chosen. The two intertwined dolphins in a shell were crafted from Colmenar stone. From their mouths flow two spouts. Thus the Fuente de los Delfines was born.

The Fuente de los Delfines is a survivor. It’s a testament to Madrid’s evolution. It’s witnessed the rise and fall of convents. It has seen the changing flow of traffic. It has stood firm as the city around it changed. It is a small reminder of Madrid’s rich and layered history. It is a quiet yet powerful story.

Notice the inscription MDCCLXXII. This inscription is visible on the fountain. It marks the year 1772. This is when Ventura Rodríguez’s masterpiece was first unveiled. Today the Fuente de los Delfines stands. It is a charming symbol of the past. It’s a place where history and the present beautifully intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate its enduring presence in the heart of Madrid.
