Thirsty? This is the Fuente de la Salud in Madrid’s Parque del Oeste. This seemingly unassuming fountain has a rich history. For many years Madrileños believed its waters held curative powers. They flocked here to fill their containers believing the water could cure kidney ailments.
The Fuente de la Salud isn’t just any fountain. Its current form dates back to after the Spanish Civil War. A spring existed nearby much earlier though. A map from 1848 shows a spring in this area. The fountain as we see it today was likely built during the park’s restoration in the early 1940s. This restoration transformed the area. It once formed part of the San Bernardino stream.
The water flowing from the Fuente de la Salud once held a special reputation. People believed it had healing properties. This belief persisted for a long time. Sadly though tests in the 1960s revealed contamination. Sewage from the Argüelles neighborhood infiltrated the water supply. This led to the closure of the fountain’s pipes. Plans to restore the fountain using water from the Lozoya River never materialized.
Today the Fuente de la Salud still flows. However two signs clearly warn visitors that the water is not potable. It’s a sobering reminder of how things change. The fountain remains a historical landmark. It serves as a poignant reminder of a time when Madrileños sought health and healing in its waters. Even though the water is no longer safe to drink its story continues to captivate and intrigue. It is a testament to the enduring allure of nature’s gifts.

His work beautifully integrated the natural spring and stream into the park’s design between 1898 and 1901. This created a serene oasis within the bustling city.
