In the heart of Madrid, the Fuente de la Asamblea whispers tales of a city’s embrace. This isn’t just a fountain. It’s a vibrant testament to Madrid’s welcoming spirit, crafted in 1998 by the city’s own Public Works Department with a touch of artistry from Valencian sculptor José Torres Guardia. The Fuente de la Asamblea isn’t merely a visual spectacle. It’s a symphony of water and light, a sprawling 425 square meters of intricate design. Three concentric basins, shaped like a four-leaf clover, rise in a tiered embrace. The smallest, a perfect circle, crowns the structure, while the larger basins cascade downwards, creating a mesmerizing flow. 245 surtidores, or water jets, dance in choreographed patterns. A central geyser in the top basin shoots 20 meters into the air. It’s surrounded by 60 jets converging in a graceful dome. In the middle basin, four circular clusters of jets surround central spouts, creating miniature fountains within the fountain. Smaller jets, arranged in pairs and trios, add to the watery ballet. Each jet is illuminated, their light playing on the water’s surface. Four symbolic figures grace the fountain’s perimeter. These polished, abstract forms, oriented to the cardinal points, embody Madrid’s hospitality. They evoke the city’s iconic bear, embracing a small sphere, symbolizing the world. The figures’ perforated sides add a touch of mystery to their otherwise solid forms, a contrast that speaks to the artist’s unique vision. The Fuente de la Asamblea is more than just a fountain. It is nestled within a lush, circular garden, 30 meters in diameter. Trees, shrubs, and flowers create a vibrant frame for this watery masterpiece. The landscaping, designed by the Fronda company, even won an award in Madrid’s Urban Gardening Competition. The Fuente de la Asamblea embodies a city’s pride, a harmonious blend of art, nature, and engineering, a testament to Madrid’s enduring spirit.
