Quench your thirst for history at the Fuente de Cabestreros. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a Madrid treasure. Located in the vibrant Lavapiés neighborhood the Fuente de Cabestreros boasts a rich past. Its story unfolds like a captivating novel.

The Fuente de Cabestreros has been a Madrid landmark since at least the 17th century. That’s when it first appeared on Pedro de Texeira’s map. Imagine the bustling scene then. The fountain provided water to the neighborhood. It even supplied the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena. That convent stood nearby until its demolition in 1973. The area where the convent once stood is now the Plaza de Nelson Mandela.

Originally fed by the Bajo Abroñigal spring the Fuente de Cabestreros had two spouts. Up to 24 water carriers served the community. The name Cabestreros itself tells a tale. It comes from the hemp rope makers who worked in the area. They were known as cabestreros because they made harnesses for horses.

The Fuente de Cabestreros underwent a major transformation during the Spanish Second Republic. In 1934 it was remodeled. This new version had two spouts and two basins. They were crafted from granite and Colmenar white stone. A pineapple finial tops the fountain. This pineapple symbolizes fertility and abundance.

This is one of the few fountains in Madrid that retains its Second Republic symbolism. The inscription on the fountain’s stone is a silent witness to that era. It’s a unique piece of Madrid’s history. Unfortunately it has been the victim of vandalism at times.

A legend adds to the charm of the Fuente de Cabestreros. Some people call it the Fuente de los Machos. Local lore suggests its water boosted masculinity. This led to the saying “He’s a real man because he drank the water of Cabestreros”. The fountain’s water no longer flows from the original spring. Today its main function is ornamental and symbolic. Yet the Fuente de Cabestreros continues to be a significant landmark of Lavapiés. A beautiful historic fountain this is a fascinating glimpse into Madrid’s history. It’s a story etched in stone and whispered on the wind.
