Hidden within Wuhlheide’s sprawling parkland rests the Fuchsbau a unique environmental and meeting centre. Its story is one of transformation and resilience.

The Fuchsbau wasn’t always a haven for nature lovers. Before its current incarnation it served a very different purpose. This building once housed the Department of Tourism/Defence Education. Over 60 beds provided accommodation for young tourists. Summer months saw the capacity swell to 300 with the addition of outdoor tents. The site hosted military and district Spartakiads organised by the Society for Sport and Technology. Young tourists explored the Berlin area developing hiking routes.

The Fuchsbau’s rebirth began in 1995. It opened its doors as overnight accommodation for the Young Friends of Nature Association. Since 2006 the Forum Young Friends of Nature Berlin a non-profit organisation has overseen the Fuchsbau. This group maintains several children’s youth and family centres in Berlin. Their dedication continues the Fuchsbau’s legacy of connecting young people with nature.

The Young Friends of Nature itself boasts a rich history. Its roots lie in the workers’ movement of the early 20th century. Working people craved access to nature. The organisation provided opportunities for hiking and excursions. The Young Friends of Nature emerged in 1926 offering an alternative to bourgeois education. They focused on outdoor experiences.

Today the Fuchsbau continues to thrive. It offers 75 beds for groups from daycares primary schools and associations. The Fuchsbau hosts seminars and events focused on environmental issues. A well-equipped environmental library supports these activities. The team provides advice and support. Beyond the educational aspects recreational opportunities abound. Guests can explore playgrounds sports fields a skater track and swimming pools. The nearby FEZ Berlin offers further entertainment. Even Berlin’s iconic sights are within reach at the Model Park. The Fuchsbau remains fully wheelchair accessible. It features a dedicated disabled toilet. Its modern washrooms boast 12 showers. A large dining room comfortably accommodates 80 people. The building also includes two rooms for supervisors and various shared rooms for children complete with bunk beds. A spacious terrace adds to the appeal. The Fuchsbau embodies the spirit of its origins offering a unique blend of education recreation and environmental awareness. This is more than just a building it’s a testament to the power of nature and community.
