This ambitious project, however, faced many challenges, including several interruptions, and was finally completed in 1957, after 37 long years. Its granite exterior, quarried from São Gens in the 20th century, is adorned with sculptures by José Sousa Caldas and Henrique Moreira, a celebration of Porto’s history and heritage.
