Whispers of the fallen echo across the fields of Fromelles. This unassuming village in northern France holds a poignant place in history. Fromelles is inextricably linked to the First World War specifically the disastrous Battle of Fromelles.

In July 1916 the Australian Imperial Force AIF fought its first major battle on the Western Front here. The battle was intended as a diversion for the Battle of the Somme. Instead it became a devastating loss for the Allies. Historians estimate that 5500 Australians and 2000 British soldiers were killed or wounded in just 24 hours. This single day represented more casualties than the AIF suffered in the Boer War Korean War and Vietnam War combined.

The sheer scale of loss at Fromelles led to many hastily made mass graves. Both Allied and German forces buried their dead in the surrounding fields. For years the exact locations of these graves were unknown. It was only in the early 2000s following research in Bavarian Army archives that a significant mass grave was located. The Bois de Phaisan Pheasant Wood site proved to be the largest mass grave of Western Allied soldiers discovered since World War I.

The discovery was a turning point for Fromelles. Between 2009 and 2010 extensive exhumations were undertaken. The remains of 250 British and Australian soldiers were recovered. DNA analysis was crucial. These soldiers were then given individual burials. They are now laid to rest in the new Fromelles Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery.

But the story of Fromelles doesn’t end there. VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial stands as a testament to those whose identities could never be recovered. The names of almost 1300 Australians are inscribed on its walls. These men died in the Battle of Fromelles. Their remains were never found.

These memorials at Fromelles are places of profound reflection. They honor the sacrifice of countless soldiers. They serve as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war. The village itself remains a quiet testament to a significant historical tragedy. The ongoing efforts to identify and remember the fallen are vital parts of the continuing story of Fromelles.
