“Did you know this spot held a giant?” I ask. The Fritz-Überle-Linde isn’t there anymore. Gone. But its story remains. This very spot once held a magnificent lime tree. A true giant among trees. This wasn’t just any lime tree. This was the Fritz-Überle-Linde a landmark in Heidelberg.
It stood tall for years. Its trunk thick and strong. It boasted a huge full crown. In 1995 its girth measured 4.25 meters a testament to its age and majesty. The Heidelberg Historical Society even commemorated the Odenwald Club’s 125th anniversary with an explanatory plaque right here.
Sadly the Fritz-Überle-Linde met its end in May 2011. Strong winds proved too much for the old giant. The tree fell. It’s gone. But the memories remain. Think of the countless people who sought its shade. Who enjoyed its beauty. The Fritz-Überle-Linde stood as a symbol of Heidelberg’s rich history and natural beauty. It served as a silent witness to the changing seasons and the passage of time.
Now only the faint memory of the Fritz-Überle-Linde remains. The location may be marked incorrectly on some maps. Yet the story of this grand old tree lives on. It’s a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life. Even of the largest and most enduring trees. And yet the spirit of the Fritz-Überle-Linde continues. It lives on in the stories we tell. In the memories we hold dear. It continues in the very soil beneath our feet.
