Here stands the Fritz Storch Plaque a poignant reminder of a life tragically cut short. This unassuming metal plate tells a story of injustice and resilience. It marks the last known address of Fritz Storch a man whose life intersected with both the Nazi and the Soviet regimes.

Fritz Storch born in 1899 lived a seemingly ordinary life. He worked as an accountant in various insurance companies. He married Selma Gerda Rieger and they had twin daughters. In 1941 he became a clerk in the finance department of the Lublin district. This involved managing travel expenses. He was a member of the Nazi motor transport corps.

After the war he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany or SED. He resumed his work as an accountant in Berlin. In 1950 he became economic director of the Reichsbahn long-distance telecommunications office. He lived with his family in this very building at Mengerzeile 8.

But Fritz Storch’s life took a dark turn. In 1951 the Stasi arrested him. They accused him of speaking negatively about the SED regime. They accused him of possessing Western newspapers. They even claimed he gave information about Berlin’s railway network and the Wismut mining company to British intelligence. His wife was interrogated and fled to West Berlin with their daughters.

A Soviet military tribunal sentenced him to death in April 1951. He was sent to Moscow and executed in July 1951. His body was cremated and his ashes placed in a mass grave. For almost 50 years his family didn’t know what happened. Only in 1999 was he fully rehabilitated. His daughter Elvira and granddaughter Jutta were present when this plaque was installed in 2022.

The Fritz Storch Plaque isn’t just a piece of metal. It’s a symbol of remembrance. It’s a testament to the enduring power of family. It stands as a reminder that individual stories illuminate the darkest chapters of history. It honors the memory of a man wrongly accused and executed. It acknowledges the suffering of his family. It ensures Fritz Storch is not forgotten. The plaque serves as a silent witness to a tragic event. It compels us to learn and reflect on the injustices of the past. It is more than just a plaque. It is a symbol of hope. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the face of unimaginable loss remembrance and justice can prevail.
