Over 3500 works. Can you imagine? That’s the sheer scale of the Frissiras Museum’s collection. Right here in Athens.

Welcome to the Frissiras Museum a treasure trove of contemporary European painting. Nestled in the heart of Plaka this museum isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the vision of Vlassis Frissiras. An attorney by profession he possessed an insatiable passion for art.

In 1978 he began his remarkable journey. He collected works by young Greek artists. His goal? To create a collection focused on the human form and figurative art. He championed a style sometimes sidelined by newer art movements. His dedication blossomed. In the 1990s his scope expanded. He included European artists in his collection.

The Frissiras Museum is housed in two stunning neoclassical buildings. One at 3 Monis Asteriou Street dates back to 1860. It’s one of Athens’ first neoclassical houses. The Frissiras family meticulously restored it. They preserved elements like the internal yard and Athenian windows. A glass roof designed by Alexandros N Tombazis tops the atrium. It’s a breathtaking sight.

The building at number 7 Monis Asteriou Street was designed by the legendary architect Ernst Ziller. Opened in 1904 it’s a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. Ionian-style elements grace its facade. The Ministry of Culture recognizes it as a late historical monument. The Frissiras family also restored it. It’s now part of this exceptional museum.

The museum officially opened in December 2000. President Constantine Stefanopoulos inaugurated it. Dimitris Avramopoulos the Mayor of Athens officially opened it. The Frissiras family founded and manages it. It’s a non-profit organization committed to preserving and promoting art. It’s a dynamic space hosting exhibitions by both established and emerging artists. It reflects a living dialogue about European artistic trends. The Frissiras Museum is a cultural beacon in Athens. A must-see for any art lover. A window into the soul of European art. It continues to evolve. It’s a vibrant testament to the enduring power of art.
