FRIM Selangor Forest Park began its life in 1926. A visionary named F W Foxworthy saw potential where others saw only devastation. The land was scarred from tin mining and farming. It was a landscape stripped bare. But Foxworthy had a dream. He envisioned a reborn rainforest.
He planted the first seeds of this ambitious project. Within two years experimental plantations thrived. Dipterocarps tall hardwood species were carefully nurtured using nurse trees. These provided shade and nitrogen fixing nutrients for the young saplings. By 1928 the main building stood. It housed laboratories a herbarium and a museum. This served as the sole center for research for years.
The park’s expansion continued. It was a labor of love a slow careful process. By 1957 almost 220 hectares of plantations flourished. The dipterocarp and non-dipterocarp arboreta held hundreds of species. The herbarium collection had exploded to over 50000 accessions. FRIM became a leader in tropical forestry research. The Timber Research Branch even moved from Sentul to become a part of this thriving institute.
In 1985 FRIM became an autonomous statutory body. The Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board took over the administration. This is the point where the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia became the FRIM we know and love today. Dr Salleh Mohd Nor became its first director-general. FRIM’s area expanded to an impressive 600 hectares. It continued to expand further to encompass the current 1528 hectares.
Today FRIM Selangor Forest Park is renowned worldwide. It is the world’s oldest and largest re-created tropical rainforest. This remarkable achievement stands as a beacon of hope.
