In 1220, a small village nestled in the eastern expanse of Essen first appeared in historical records. It was known as Vrylincthorpe, the “Village of the Free,” a name that speaks to the independent spirit of Frillendorf. Today, Frillendorf stands as a testament to its rich industrial heritage, a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of coal, steel, and community. Frillendorf isn’t a typical village with a quaint center. It’s a district characterized by residential areas interspersed with green spaces and thriving industrial zones, a landscape shaped by its history. The heart of Frillendorf beats in its former collieries, now transformed into bustling hubs of commerce. The echoes of the past resonate here. The Zeche Königin Elisabeth, once a powerful engine of the coal industry, has left its mark. A few structures still stand, including the 1912 administration building, now repurposed as a photo studio and artist’s atelier. Schacht Emil, another vestige of the colliery, has found new life as a commercial complex. Frillendorf’s industrial transformation brought an influx of workers, leading to the creation of mining settlements. These settlements, like those along Hubertstraße, Elisabethstraße, and Zehntfeld, housed the families who powered the region’s industrial growth. Frillendorf’s growth peaked in 1975, with around 6,900 residents. The subsequent decline of the coal industry left its mark, and the population has gradually decreased. But Frillendorf’s story isn’t solely one of industry. The Regenbogen Schule, a primary school formed by the merger of two older schools, stands as a symbol of the community’s enduring spirit. The neighborhood also holds a hidden architectural gem: the Frillendorf water tower. Built in 1925 by architect Arndts, this tower still serves the community. It’s a reminder of a time when the coal industry threatened the region’s water supply, lowering the water table. Frillendorf’s spiritual heart resides in its churches. The Church of the Holy Guardian Angel, a brick expressionist masterpiece by architect Edmund Kӧrner, is a testament to the community’s faith and resilience. It was the first church in the Archdiocese of Cologne not built in the neo-Gothic or neo-Romanesque style. In contrast, the more modern Barenbruch Community Center, now known as Auf’m Bӧntchen, has seen changes. The former church building was demolished in 2021, but the kindergarten remains. Frillendorf’s story is one of transformation and resilience, a community that has adapted and evolved in the face of change, while cherishing its unique past.
