Ever wondered about Malmo’s hidden history? Right here at Frihamnen we stand on ground built not by nature but by human ambition.

Frihamnen a bustling hub today was once a very different place. This area part of Malmo’s port district has seen centuries of transformation. It wasn’t always a place for storing and transferring goods. Malmo historically lacked a natural deep harbor. Ships had to anchor far out in the Oresund. Goods were then transferred to smaller boats. This was far from ideal. The old Fergebron a long pier was constantly damaged by weather and ice. Repairs were frequent and costly.

Imagine the constant struggle against the elements. The intense winds and the unpredictable ice. Imagine the hard work of the men transferring goods from ship to smaller boat. This was the daily reality for centuries. That all changed in 1770. Frans Suell and city leaders wanted a real harbor. One where larger ships could dock directly. The construction began. It was a monumental task. The workforce included soldiers and convicts. By 1820 two piers existed. The water between them was 15 to 4 meters deep.

The expansion continued. Land was reclaimed. This expanded the harbor. A railway station opened in 1856. This connected Malmo to Lund. It was a significant development for the port. Passengers could disembark to board ferries to Copenhagen or the continent. The railway played a huge role in the port’s growth. It enabled further expansion. Construction could easily occur. It happened in an uninhabited area. There were no houses or farms nearby.

Kockums shipyard established itself in the western part in the 1870s. Regular ferry services to England and Copenhagen began in the 1890s. Then came Frihamnen. It officially opened in 1923. It’s a key part of the story of Malmo’s port. It now handles the storage and transshipment of goods. Most of it is containers destined for countries around the Baltic Sea. Today Frihamnen’s role is crucial in the regional and international trade. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Malmo. A harbor that started small then expanded through sheer human determination.
