Does the name Frienstedt ring a bell? It should. Frienstedt is a special place. It is a piece of Erfurt with a unique past. Frienstedt offers more than meets the eye.

Today, we’re exploring the hidden stories of Frienstedt. This westernmost district of Erfurt has a history stretching back over 1200 years.

Imagine Frienstedt long ago. Its name might come from a “vrinstete.” This was a free place. Here, persecuted people could find safety. They would not be punished here.

Frienstedt’s story is also tied to an old road. The via regia was a major trade route. It passed by Frienstedt. This road connected Gotha and Erfurt. Erfurt wanted to protect traders using the road. So, Erfurt expanded its territory. This gave the merchants more security. In the 15th century, Frienstedt became part of Erfurt.

After the German reunification, Frienstedt grew. A new residential area expanded the village. Frienstedt celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 1996.

Three clubs shape the cultural life of Frienstedt today. The Landfrauen is an organization that cares a lot about the senior citizens. The local kindergarten provides learning and security for the youngest residents.

Currently, there are efforts to improve Frienstedt. An old restaurant is being turned into a community center. This will offer citizens and clubs a place to meet.

Citizens of Frienstedt are working with the city of Erfurt. Together, they completed projects in recent years. The churchyard gate was restored. The sports club got an extension. A new playground opened on Dietendorfer Strasse in 2010.

Citizens, the local council and the mayor are committed to more progress. They all work to shape Frienstedt’s future. The people in Frienstedt make it a great place to live.
