Beneath the Texas sun stands the Friendswood Plaque. A simple marker yet it speaks volumes. It tells a story of faith perseverance and community.

This isn’t just a plaque. It’s a testament to the Friendswood Quaker colony. Founded in 1895 by Frank Jacob Brown and Thomas Hadley Lewis. These men sought a new life a place to build a community dedicated to God. They found 1538 acres of prairie land. This land was drained by four creeks Chigger Coward’s Mary’s and Clear Creek. They named their new settlement Friendswood a name reflecting their shared faith and fellowship.

The early years were marked by hard work. The Friendswood settlers built homes. They farmed figs oranges and rice. They built a two-story Academy that served as church school and community center. The Friendswood Academy even attracted students from surrounding areas lacking high schools.

Life wasn’t always easy. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 tested their resilience. Yet they rebuilt stronger than ever. They used the sawmill to turn the fallen trees into lumber for the Academy. Friendswood also experienced a labor dispute. The details of this are not included here. The community survived even this challenge.

In the 1960s the proximity to NASA’s Johnson Space Center changed Friendswood. Hundreds of NASA employees moved to Friendswood. This led to a huge population boom. Subdivisions schools churches and businesses sprang up. Friendswood transformed from a rural Quaker settlement into a thriving suburban community.

Even without a doctor bank or newspaper in the early days Friendswood persevered. This plaque commemorates that enduring spirit. It embodies a legacy of faith hard work and community. The Friendswood Plaque is more than a marker. It is a symbol of a community’s unwavering spirit. A testament to the lasting impact of the Quaker settlers. It’s a reminder of how faith family and education shaped a town. And a symbol of how this community has persevered through the trials and tribulations of time. Remember Friendswood. Remember its story.
