How about we step back to 1888? Friendship Baptist Church wasn’t always known by that name. It began as the 18th Street Methodist Episcopal Church.
J. Franklin Stuckert designed this gorgeous building. Its beauty was formally recognized. In honor of its hundredth birthday, it was added to the Philadelphia Historic Register. This designation protects it from demolition or significant exterior changes.
Many old churches disappeared as neighborhoods gentrified. A historic designation does not guarantee survival. Buildings can be torn down if they deteriorate too much. Luckily, that wasn’t the case here for Friendship Baptist Church. Though it had seen better days.
Like many aging churches in gentrifying areas, the congregation faced challenges. Maintaining a 130-year-old building is incredibly costly. Heating and cooling such a large space is a fortune. Many congregations sell their buildings because of this. They either close down or move to smaller spaces. Often, the property is sold to a developer. The building is then torn down.
But Friendship Baptist Church has been given a chance. Developers planned to renovate the building. They wanted to convert it into a ten-unit apartment building. The parcel was zoned for single-family residential use. The project needed approval from the ZBA.
Many in the community supported the proposal. It allowed the historic building to remain. It also provided much-needed funds for its preservation. However, parking concerns also surfaced. The community meeting was a debate between preservation and parking interests. The developers wanted to transform the building into a residential space while carefully preserving its original design and historical features. The vision included modern apartments that integrate seamlessly into the church’s existing architecture, creating a unique living experience for future residents.
The developers understood the importance of maintaining the church’s historical integrity. They pledged to work closely with preservation experts to ensure that all renovations are in line with historical guidelines and regulations. Their goal was not just to repurpose the building. They aimed to honor its legacy and contribute to the revitalization of the neighborhood.
