In 1965 a small group gathered in a home. This was the humble beginning of Friendship Baptist Church. It wasn’t in a grand building. It began in the home of Mr and Mrs JA Durst.
Soon they outgrew the house. A 16 by 33 foot army tent became their sanctuary. Imagine Sunday services under canvas. Chickens even laid eggs in the sawdust floor. This small tent was Friendship Baptist Church for two years.
Their faith grew. In 1966 they started a live radio broadcast. Every Sunday morning from 9 30 to 9 45 AM their message went out over the airwaves. This continued for ten years spreading the word far and wide.
The church’s mission wasn’t confined to Brisbane. Friendship Baptist Church supports missionaries globally. They help families in India Israel Mauritius Pakistan Papua New Guinea the Philippines and West Africa. They also support the persecuted church worldwide. Their dedication is far-reaching.
Friendship Baptist Church also established a Christian school in 1970. It started with one kindergarten class. It grew rapidly adding grades year after year. The first graduating class was in 1980. New buildings were added over the years. Today the church and school stand as a testament to their enduring faith and commitment.
From a small tent to a thriving community Friendship Baptist Church has grown. It remains a vital part of the Brisbane landscape. Its legacy of faith service and global outreach continues to inspire.
