Did you know Friendly Missionary Baptist Church started as West Flint Mission? That’s right this church’s story begins in late 1939. Services were initially held in an old gym. Eld Earl Kinney was the first pastor. Early members were already focused on missions. They collected offerings for both the pastor and foreign missions.
Friendly Missionary Baptist Church officially adopted its name in January 1940. By spring they had ordained deacons. They purchased land on Lambden Road to build their first building. While building services moved to a store on Corunna Road. Finally in September 1940 Friendly Missionary Baptist Church held its first service in its new building. 152 people attended that special day.
Throughout the 1940s and 70s Friendly Missionary Baptist Church flourished. It played a vital role in the creation of several other churches. This included New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Flint and Lansing. Others were in Collinsville Illinois and even Calvary Baptist Church in Flint. The original Lambden Road location saw many renovations. These improvements included indoor plumbing a baptistery and a steeple.
Several pastors served Friendly Missionary Baptist Church during this period. Eld Earl Kinney served twice. Others included Eld Grover Gean Eld JA Lawson and Charles Terry. Martin Watkins led from 2001 to 2018. The church’s dedication to its mission is evident. Friendly Missionary Baptist Church’s impact spread far beyond its walls.
In 1980 Friendly Missionary Baptist Church voted to buy land for its current location. Groundbreaking happened in October 1986. The first services were held at the current location on West Court Street in 1987. Friendly Missionary Baptist Church’s affiliations changed over time. Nationally it was part of the American Baptist Association. Locally it connected with several associations. The church’s commitment to spreading its faith shows up clearly.
TJ Blankinship became pastor in December 2020. Friendly Missionary Baptist Church continues its work. It preaches and teaches the Gospel message following the Great Commission. It eagerly awaits the return of the Lord. The legacy of this church is one of faith service and community. The church’s story shows a lasting commitment to the word of God.
