Hidden among the historic cemeteries of Charleston lies the Friendly Charitable Association Cemetery. It’s part of the larger Adverse Cemetery a complex of four separate burial grounds. This quiet corner holds a piece of Charleston’s rich African American history.

For generations African Americans faced systemic barriers to dignified burial. They were often excluded from established cemeteries. So they formed mutual aid societies. These burial societies provided a final resting place and financial support for members. They were also vital social institutions.

The Friendly Charitable Association Cemetery is a testament to this spirit. Established in 1856 it reflects the resilience and community of African Americans. The cemetery is located on Mechanic Street. It’s the fourth cemetery on the left. You can reach it by taking I-26 Eastbound towards Charleston. Take exit 219A. Turn left onto Heriot Street. The street will become Petty then Mechanic Street.

Many of these societies had similar designs mirroring those of contemporary white cemeteries. They reflected the Rural Cemetery Movement. This shows the desire for dignified burial spaces even in the face of discrimination. The Friendly Charitable Association Cemetery unfortunately has few visible headstones today. However the grounds bear silent witness to the lives and legacies buried within.

The cemetery’s story is a reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities. It’s also a celebration of their enduring strength. The Friendly Charitable Association Cemetery stands as a legacy of mutual aid and community resilience. Its presence is essential for preserving the rich history of Charleston’s African American community. The cemetery is a peaceful place for remembrance reflection and a powerful testament to the enduring human spirit.
