How about we uncover a village founded by a king? This is Friedrichshagen. It is a locality within Berlin’s Treptow-Köpenick borough. Friedrichshagen boasts a rich history and unique character.

In 1753, King Frederick II of Prussia established Friedrichshagen. It was initially a colony named Friedrichsgnade. The king intended it to be a home for cotton spinners. These industrious people came from Bohemia and Silesia. They lived in distinctive clay half-timbered houses.

Around 1840, the Märkische Eisenbahn included Friedrichshagen as a stop. This railway connection spurred growth. Friedrichshagen transformed into a villa suburb. It became a popular destination in the 19th century. Tourists flocked to new beer gardens, cafes, hotels, and bathing areas.

Let’s talk about the Bölschestrasse. This is the heart of Friedrichshagen. It is a promenade that captures the area’s spirit. The Berliner Bürgerbräu brewery was once a major attraction here. Sadly, it closed in 2010. It briefly served as a museum but has been empty for years. The building is a protected monument.

Take a look at the market square. Here stands the Christophoruskirche and a monument to Frederick II. The statue is a tribute to the founder of Friedrichshagen.

In 1889, a waterworks was constructed. It supplied the district in a neo-Gothic style. The waterworks now functions only to a small extent. In 1987, one of the pumping machine houses became a waterworks museum. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. The entire waterworks site is under monument protection.

The Spree Tunnel was built in 1927. It eased ferry traffic. The tunnel connects Köpenick and Friedrichshagen. Pedestrians and cyclists can use its stairs.

As you wander through Friedrichshagen, notice the architecture. Many buildings showcase Jugendstil or Art Nouveau designs. These colorful structures add to the town’s charm. The houses are mostly two-story buildings. They are legally protected to retain their original style.

Friedrichshagen has long been an artist’s and poet’s town. It maintains a village feel despite being part of Berlin. The main street features well-maintained old signs. You can find many women’s clothing shops with local designs. Perhaps this is a spin-off from the old cotton industry days.

The town square is currently being redesigned. The plans include more grass and less concrete. The goal is a more inviting public space.

Friedrichshagen offers a peaceful escape from the city center. It is a place where history and art intertwine. Its unique atmosphere will stay with you long after you leave.
