Here, etched in stone, is a story of ambition. It’s a story of innovation and, ultimately, a family’s enduring legacy. This memorial is for Friedrich Krupp.

Friedrich Krupp, born in 1787, wasn’t born into riches. The Krupp family, though established in Essen since 1587, mostly worked in commerce and local government. Friedrich’s father died early and he only attended grammar school until he was 14. His grandmother, Helene Amalie Krupp, ran a successful grocery store. He apprenticed there. From 1805, he learned metallurgy at his grandmother’s iron mill.

Imagine young Friedrich, barely out of his teens. He is filled with dreams of transforming iron into something greater. He briefly owned the iron mill, transferred to him by his grandmother. But she reversed the decision due to his lack of success. It was a setback but it didn’t extinguish his inner fire.

In 1808, Friedrich Krupp married Therese Wilhelmi. Together, they had four children: Ida, Alfred, Hermann, and Friedrich. He ran a store selling Dutch produce. After his grandmother’s death in 1810, he took over her grocery store. He soon abandoned those ventures to focus on cast steel production.

Napoleon’s Continental Blockade in 1811 spurred Friedrich into action. He established a factory to make English cast steel. This was with two partners. By 1816, he was running the operation solo. He developed a process for high-quality crucible steel production. Friedrich sold bars, rods, and tools. The Düsselfdorf mint confirmed the quality of his cast steel in 1817.

However, Friedrich Krupp struggled to secure long-term profitability. Building a new factory drained his capital. He couldn’t meet the demand for his products in the required quality. Friedrich was committed to Essen. He played an active role in local government.

His health declined in his final years. By the time Friedrich Krupp died in 1826, crucible steel production had almost stopped. His widow Therese, supported by her son Alfred and other relatives, continued the company. She remained the owner until 1848.

Friedrich Krupp’s initial efforts laid the groundwork. His son Alfred transformed the small foundry into a global powerhouse. The family became synonymous with steel and, later, armaments. Friedrich’s ambition and Therese’s resolve ensured the Krupp name would become legendary.

Though Friedrich didn’t achieve immense wealth in his lifetime, his pioneering spirit is undeniable. He launched the family’s metal activities. He built a steel foundry in Essen in 1811. Remember Friedrich Krupp, the man who started it all. He built his first tilt hammer here in the Walkmühle in 1812.
