Can you imagine attending a school where whispers of history echo through the halls? At Friedrich-Gymnasium, history isn’t just in textbooks. It’s woven into the very fabric of the building. Friedrich-Gymnasium, established in 1904 as Freiburg’s second classical grammar school, stands as a testament to time. Named after Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, it was designed by Karlsruhe architect Josef Durm. The school’s Art Nouveau style and unique layout have earned it a place among Freiburg’s significant cultural landmarks. Friedrich-Gymnasium offers a blend of classical, modern language, and natural science programs. In 1904, boys and girls attended class together. In the inaugural year, there were 314 boys and just two girls. Imagine eight, sometimes even fourteen, hours of Latin a week alongside only two hours of science! A unique feature of Friedrich-Gymnasium was its elaborate stained-glass window. Created by Fritz Geiges, it depicted the Battle of Sempach. Sadly, this masterpiece was destroyed in World War II. During both World Wars, the Friedrich-Gymnasium served as a hospital, interrupting classes and transforming classrooms into operating rooms. The school even survived the devastating bombing of Freiburg in 1944 with minimal damage, though the stained-glass window was lost. The school’s history reflects Germany’s tumultuous past. It endured the rise of National Socialism. It navigated the post-war period under French occupation. It even had to share its building with other schools due to overcrowding in 1947. Friedrich-Gymnasium is not just a school. It’s a living museum, a silent storyteller, and a symbol of resilience in the heart of Freiburg. Today, Friedrich-Gymnasium embraces modernity. It participates in a tablet pilot program. It has a thriving documentary filmmaking workshop. It also hosts a vibrant music program. Friedrich-Gymnasium continues to shape young minds, carrying its rich legacy into the future.
