Could a forgotten mineshaft hold a connection to a famous explorer? Here at the Friedlicher Vertrag Schacht in Freiberg, the answer is a resounding yes. This unassuming shaft whispers a story of silver, secrets, and a surprising encounter with Alexander von Humboldt. The Friedlicher Vertrag Schacht, also known as the Humboldt Shaft, is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a portal to Freiberg’s rich mining past. This shaft, once part of the “Neubeschert Glück in der Stadt” mine, played a small but significant role in the city’s silver mining operations during the 18th century. Its story ended abruptly in 1799 when underground mining ceased. Yet, just a decade earlier, the mine was thriving. In 1791, a young Alexander von Humboldt arrived in Freiberg to study. His mentor, Gottlob Abraham Werner, sent him to the nearby “Neubeschert Glück in der Stadt” mine to learn about modern mining practices. Humboldt’s visit on July 5th, 1791, is documented in his excursion report. His journey through the mine ended at the Friedlicher Vertrag Schacht, placing him within sight of his friend Johann Carl Freiersleben’s house. This unexpected appearance must have been quite a surprise. Rediscovered in 2018 during renovations, the Friedlicher Vertrag Schacht gained renewed attention. The timing was perfect. It coincided with the 250th anniversary of Humboldt’s birth, cementing its association with the renowned explorer. While the shaft itself remains closed to the public for safety reasons, its story lives on. A 3D model, created using a handheld laser scanner, allows visitors to virtually explore its depths. A specially designed manhole cover marks its location, accompanied by a stele and video displays showcasing the shaft and tunnel system. The Friedlicher Vertrag Schacht, a silent witness to Freiberg’s mining legacy, offers a glimpse into the past and a connection to one of history’s greatest explorers.
