Peace rests here. The Friedhofskapelle Bargteheide stands before you a sanctuary of quiet contemplation. This modern chapel wasn’t always here. Before 2003 mourners gathered at an older chapel on the Alte Landstrasse. This building however designed by Petersen Pöhrksen und Partner architects from Lübeck opened its doors in June 2003.

The Friedhofskapelle Bargteheide is more than just a building. It’s a place of solace a space designed for peaceful farewells. The architects thoughtfully planned its layout. The main chapel seats 120 people. An additional 50 seats can be added if needed. Should a larger gathering be required extra chairs can accommodate up to 270 mourners. A comforting organ fills the space with music. CDs can also be played through a sound system.

But the Kapelle’s design goes beyond mere seating. It offers rooms for private farewells. A smaller space is dedicated to urn burials. A waiting area provides comfort for grieving families and friends. There’s even a meeting room for the pastor or officiant. Accessibility features are key. The entire building is single-story including a wheelchair-accessible restroom.

The building’s exterior is less emphasized than the interior. The pathway from the parking lot to the chapel is intentional. It’s designed to provide space for reflection to help mourners leave daily life behind. The transition into the chapel itself creates a sense of sanctuary. The structure is built with sturdy wooden frames. Wooden vaults suspended between the beams add warmth and diffuse light. The overall feeling is one of peace quiet and protection. A final shared space with the deceased. The Friedhofskapelle Bargteheide is not simply a place for funerals. It’s a thoughtfully designed haven providing comfort and support during a time of deep sorrow. The legacy of this building is one of peace and thoughtful farewells.
