Have you ever strolled through a cemetery? Friedhof Unterrath in Dusseldorf, Germany is more than just a place where people are buried. This historic cemetery opened in 1807. The old cemetery, situated near the Church of St. Maria unter dem Kreuze, was no longer sufficient for the growing number of people needing a final resting place. Initially, the Friedhof Unterrath was built on one “Morgen” of land. This is an old German unit of measurement equal to about 2,500 square metres, which means a relatively small area. The cemetery is a peaceful place, with aged gravestones dating back to the mid-19th century. As Unterrath developed, the cemetery was expanded after the first and second world wars. It also grew when the town of Unterrath was incorporated into Dusseldorf in 1909. A remarkable addition is the Klosterfriedhof St. Josef, a separate cemetery situated within the Friedhof Unterrath. This is an unusual and interesting feature, creating a unique setting amid the tranquil ambiance. The cemetery currently covers 9.71 hectares, a much larger area than its initial beginnings. There are also new rooms for preparation for the funerals.
