Beneath the Berlin sky stands Friedhof St. Petri-Luisenstadt. A place of quiet reflection its history echoes through the years. This cemetery is the sole survivor of the St Petri church’s burial grounds. The oldest parish in Berlin its past is deeply rooted in the city’s growth.
Established in 1838 it was designed by Friedrich Wilhelm Langerhans. A remarkable architect he shaped this space. The cemetery borders other burial grounds on three sides. A sense of continuity pervades the air. Bishop Neander consecrated it on August 22 1838. The first burial followed the next day.
The site wasn’t always spared from the ravages of time. World War II left its mark. Bombs destroyed the administration building and the original chapel. Only their foundations remain. The entrance gate on Friedenstrasse suffered damage. Fragments of the original gate are still visible on the right pillar.
From its consecration until 1965 the cemetery served St Petri parish. After that the divided communities reunited. They formed St Petri-Luisenstadt. A main avenue lined with old trees leads to the chapel. Built between 1910 and 1912 it’s a neoclassical masterpiece. Architect Walter Koeppen designed this beautiful structure. The chapel is a protected monument and was restored in 1998 and 1999.
Notable figures found their final rest within this sacred ground. Many wealthy and historically significant people are buried here. Their impressive tombs mausoleums and wall monuments reflect their prominence. The Roesicke mausoleum is a significant example. Designed by Franz Schwechten it dates back to 1886. It has been declared a heritage site.
