How many untold stories lie beneath our feet? Here at Friedhof Nord-West, each stone whispers a fragment of Lüneburg’s past. This isn’t just a burial ground. Friedhof Nord-West is a place where history, memory, and respect intertwine.

Since 1985, the city of Lüneburg has owned Friedhof Nord-West. Before that, it served as the Anstaltsfriedhof for the Landeskrankenhaus. The cemetery sits nestled among fields near the road to Vögelsen.

Pause for a moment. Imagine the lives of those first laid to rest here in 1922. This was a time when the cemetery was part of the State Hospital.

Friedhof Nord-West offers diverse burial options. These include traditional earth burials and cremation urn placements. Wiesengrab options offer simple lawn graves with the upkeep managed by the cemetery. Rasenwahlgrab sites provide lawn plots. Families can choose headstones. Classic Wahlgrab sites allow family-maintained plots. Muslimische Grab areas are available for Islamic burials, respecting cultural traditions. Gemeinschaftsgrab sites are communal graves with cemetery-provided stones.

Note the Lüneburg crematorium also calls Friedhof Nord-West home.

Since 2008, Friedhof Nord-West has accommodated Islamic burials. This reflects Lüneburg’s evolving community. It highlights the cemetery’s commitment to inclusivity.

But there is an even more profound story to tell here. Friedhof Nord-West contains a Kriegsgräberanlage. It is a war grave site. Here lie 85 foreign victims of Nazi psychiatry. These were patients from the former Heil- und Pflegeanstalt. They suffered and perished under the Nazi regime. Many were intentionally buried apart from German war dead.

Consider the ongoing efforts to restore dignity to these forgotten souls. A project is underway to correct names and dates on the headstones. Many were wrongly recorded or “Germanized.” There are suspicions more victims rest here. Experts are conducting ground investigations to identify unmarked graves. The aim is to honor all those who suffered.

Feel the weight of history. Recognize the importance of remembrance. The city is expanding the war grave site. This provides more space for reflection. New hedges and visible stones will mark each grave.

The redesigned site will open by August 31, 2025. This coincides with the opening of the “Euthanasia” memorial center. Relatives of the victims will visit Lüneburg. They will see Friedhof Nord-West transformed.

Friedhof Nord-West is more than a final resting place. It is a testament to Lüneburg’s past. It shows the city’s commitment to honoring all its residents. It’s a reminder of the importance of remembrance and respect.
