Have you noticed the brick wall surrounding us? It marks the boundary of Friedhof Nackenberg. This is no ordinary cemetery. It is a piece of Kleefeld’s history.

Before we delve deeper, let’s set the scene. Imagine Kleefeld in the mid-19th century. Residents were buried at the Gartenkirche cemetery. It was on Marienstraße. In 1864, Kleefeld became its own parish. Yet, it wasn’t until 1886 that Friedhof Nackenberg became its own burial ground.

The first burial here took place in 1886. This 1.4-hectare space holds around 900 graves. It is a testament to generations past.

Take a closer look at the entrance. The high, Gothic-style portal is striking. This is original. It dates back to the cemetery’s opening. The oldest gravestone still standing dates to around 1888. It marks the resting place of August Gebhardt and his wife Sophie.

The Friedhof Nackenberg has seen changes over the years. It was redesigned. The layout is now a nearly rectangular area. Two paths divide it into four symmetrical sections. At the center stands the chapel. It has been modernized.

In 1972, the number of burials was reduced. Only a few burials took place in the 750 grave sites. The city of Hanover wanted to preserve the historic graves. The Stadtfriedhof Seelhorst managed it for a time.

The Petrikirche community worked to reopen Friedhof Nackenberg. It took eleven years. The city worried about the cost of maintaining many cemeteries. Kleefeld residents raised 76000 euros in donations. The Buchholz-Kleefeld district council approved the reopening. In 2010, they reached an agreement for self-administration.

Listen closely. Can you hear the bell? The Friedhof Nackenberg bell was inaugurated on September 30 2022. Donations funded it.

Among those buried here are notable figures. Bruno Valentin rests here. Also Rudolf Meister, Albin Karl, and Adolf Falke are buried here. The family grave of Georg-Heinrich Lehzen is here too. He was a bee researcher.

Friedhof Nackenberg is more than graves. It is a green space. It is a cultural monument. It connects us to Kleefeld’s past. As we leave, remember the stories held within these walls. The Friedhof Nackenberg is a reminder of life, death, and community.
