The relocation in 1682 was unusually early. Most cemeteries weren’t moved outside city walls until the 18th century during the Enlightenment. The townspeople were resistant to the change. The “Kirchenfabrik” intervened by imposing a fee of 10 Gulden for burials in the old cemetery, while burials at Friedhof Meersburg were free. This incentive finally swayed public opinion. Today, the cemetery retains its park-like ambiance, a result of Franz Sales Meyer’s plans implemented in the early 20th century. The Friedhofskapelle, originally a chapel for plague victims and the infirm, stands as a testament to Meersburg’s past. Built around 1500, it became the cemetery chapel in 1682 with the cemetery’s relocation. Friedhof Meersburg has expanded over the years.
