Amidst the bustling city of Düsseldorf, lies a tranquil sanctuary. It’s known as Friedhof Heerdt. This cemetery, the only one on Düsseldorf’s left bank of the Rhine, holds centuries of stories. It whispers tales of the city’s past.
Friedhof Heerdt isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a historical tapestry woven into the fabric of Düsseldorf. Established in 1867, it replaced the overcrowded churchyard of St. Benediktus Church. The burgeoning population during the 19th-century industrialization necessitated a larger space. Some gravestones, like those of Pfarrer Paulus Gerhardus Viehoff and Peter Jos. Corn. Reinartz, were relocated to this new resting place. Peter Jos. Corn. Reinartz, president of the church council, was the first to be buried in the new cemetery in 1841. His gravestone still stands today, marking his unique place in Friedhof Heerdt’s history.
Friedhof Heerdt has grown over the years. It now spans over 14 hectares. The cemetery is divided into three sections. The oldest part surrounds the chapel and covers 5.48 hectares. Another section, spanning 1.98 hectares, borders the Albertussee, separated from the main area by Schiess-Straße. The third part, a 6.89-hectare expanse, connects to the rest via a pedestrian bridge over a former railway line.
In 1966, a new chapel was inaugurated within Friedhof Heerdt. This chapel houses a ten-register organ and features stunning stained-glass windows by Theodor Havertz. More recently, modern bereavement rooms have been added. They offer families a contemporary space for personalized mourning ceremonies.
Friedhof Heerdt isn’t just a place of rest. It’s also a living museum of natural beauty. Towering 15-meter cedar trees, planted in the cemetery’s early days, still stand as protected monuments.
